Never Too Late Basketball Camps, Inc. runs camps and clinics for both adults and kids around the U.S and overseas. Photos from the NTL Weekend Camps (Santa Barbara, Oregon, Michigan, Western Massachusetts), the Play Forever League, various other NTL basketball events plus pics from a recent trip that I took coaching a group of outstanding Boston area high school basketball players in Brazil.

NTL Weekend Camp, Sheffield, MA, Sep 2008 : The NTL Weekend Camp in Sheffield, MA, Sep 5-7, 2008 rocked! Players from The Netherlands, Calgary (Alberta, CAN), NY (12), MA (7), WI (4), MD (2), PA, IN, CT, NJ and ME were represented. Coached by Steve Bzomowski (founder of NTL), Pete Gaudet (former head coach at Army and long-time assistant at Duke), Fred Hodson (assistant at Indiana Wesleyan), Adam Pritchard (boys' basketball coach at Belmont HS) and Tay Fisher (last seen downing #3 seed Vanderbilt with a torrent of 3s for Siena College in the 2008 NCAAs), players drilled, practiced skills, met as teams, learned offenses, OB plays, special situation strategies and competed in focused scrimmages over the course of the long weekend. A heavy rain filled the brook and waterfall up the mountain behind our lodge on Saturday, and like the basketball that was taught and practiced, brought a feeling of freshness and new beginning to our basketball experiences. Throw in the post-practice massages and the hearty meals and it's hard to imagine a better weekend!

NTL Weekend Camp, Portland OR, June 2007 : Let's see, they came one from Boston, three from NYC, Louisville, KY, San Diego, SF, Calgary (Alberta CAN), Seattle and a local Portland hoopster. A focused, energetic, full-of-desire to improve their post moves as well as decision-making on the drive, in the lane, with the ball. A group that distinguished itself by staying in the "stance" while we took photos! Also, for the fun and funny things said and shared at the lunchtable. A great and memorably enjoyable camp.

Boston NTL Classic, December 2006 : The players of the Fall 2006 Boston NTL Weekly Practice Programs gathered, Saturday, Dec 17, 2006, at Harvard University's venerable Malkin Athletic Center for the 34th Never Too Late Basketball Classic. Beginner through Intermediate players tipped off at 9:29am for two full-court games followed by a championship tilt on the Center Court (the same court upon which Bill Bradley battled Harvard hoopsters in the mid-1960s). The games were followed by the first round of the NTL/New Balance One-Minute Shooting Challenge. Donations for The Challenge, earmarked for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Bay State Chapter, topped $500. The winner in the First Division was Ta-Chung Chang of Hopkinton, MA (Stanford); he got a gift certificate for a new pair of New Balance kicks for making all those shots. The Intermediate/Advanced players lined up for the jump ball at 11:24am and followed the same format as the early group. Couple of games and then the BIG Championship. Akira Motomura who lives in Norwood, MA with his wife and showing-early-skills baby girl and who went undergrad at Yale set a PR with a 21 pt shooting effort. (He's got a short, simple, worthy-of-emulation stroke on his shot.) It was a lot of fun, a sweet and good vibe in the gym all-day because of the really good people who play NTL in Boston.

NTL Weekend Camp, Sheffield, MA, Oct 2006 : This, without a doubt, surpassed all other camps past and future. We had veterans of ten camps and we had rookies. We had guys and we had girls (meaning men and women). We even had Coach Balliro fresh from the Italian Pro Leagues. The weather was perfect, the food yummy, the coaching superb, the play scintillating and the massages, oh-so-helpful! Hope to see everyone (and many new faces) next year!

NTL Weekend Camp, Portland OR, July 2006 : Players came from Idaho, LA (wait, are they the same place?) and up and down the West Coast to be coached and play hoops in the shadow of Mt. Hood. Coaches Steve Bzomowski, Rich Wold (Gary Payton's teammate at OSU) and Ben Sullivan (6'11", U. of Portland) led the charges through all the drills, fun and competition. Cannot wait for next year. NTL Weekend Camp, Lakeside, MI, April 2006 : The Harbor Country in SW Michigan appears, at first blush, to be a quiet sleepy corner of the world. And it is, until you poke your head into the gym at River Valley High (or pull up a stool at the Red Arrow Roadside). Coach Greg Tonagel and little (solid college guard) brother, Joel, share and display their Hoosier hoops' wizardry and, next thing you know, we're all almost all-stars.

NTL Weekend Camp, Sheffield, MA, Sept 2005 : In what the coaches are now calling the greatest NTL Weekend Camp of all-time, players from seven states and wildly divergent backgrounds came together in a common cause, to practice and play basketball. The Berkshires provided the perfect weather and setting, the coaches the expertise and structure, the Race Brook Lodge the great food and beds, the massage therapists the rejuvenation and the chance to play another day, and the players the skill, spirit, team work, sportmanship and competition. A great, great weekend!

Mad Dogs in Brazil : The Antereos Mad Dogs, a collection of elite high school basketball players from Newton, Mass., recently toured Brazil taking on the best 17 year old competition in Rio de Janeiro and Londrina. The Dogs snarled, shot and sprinted their way to a perfect 4-0 record. The Mad Dogs made friends all over Brazil while making the case for the continuing pre-eminence of fastbreak, move-the-ball American-style basketball. When they weren't seeing the ball go through the hoop, they visited all the best sights in Rio , Londrina, and a final day in Sao Paulo. The wintery 80 degree weather made extended stays on Copacobana and Ipanema beaches mandatory amd seemed to ready the boys perfectly for the games that followed.

NTL Weekend Camp, Sheffield, MA, Sept 2004 : Players came from NYC, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New Jersey, Toronto freaking Canada, and all over New England (home of the World Champion Boston Red Sox) for a long weekend of hardwood hoops practice and play. Jumpers and downscreens and fast-as-you-can crossover dribbles, boxing out and outlet passes and fine finishes on the break filled the weekend in what everyone agreed was one of the finest Never Too Late Basketball Camps in history.

The target that beautiful imaginary space that you look down into after Coach Hodson has you climb the ladder for the view that tells you: it's gonna be tough to miss. The Red Arrow Straight Shooters never missed all weekend. (Players traveled from MA, FL, DC, IN, IL, MI, NJ, PA and CT!)

PFL Summer 2008 : Though the Tigers of Memphis University went undefeated, it was still a very competitive season. Of the 14 games played only one was decided by more than 8 points. Those undefeated Tigers were tested in each game, winning by margins of 8,7,5,4,4,7 and 6 points. Who is the league MVP? You'd have to split it nine ways: every Tiger gets a trophy.
